I was asked by the owner of Eagle Eye Gallery in Seattle to do something “Post Modern”. This is the wrapper for the book. Silk, stressed copper, bone latches w/leather ties. The stand was hand made of oak, by me too. Needless to say he was very surprised.

I am self taught in a variety of things. I suppose you could call me an autodidact. If I need to know how to do something I read about it to learn. I am: Well I have been all that I can be, at least so far Retired USAF Survival Instructor (1957-1961) Retired USA Drill Sergeant/Operations (1962-1978) Retired from the Evergreen State College Admissions: Records Clerk / Library: Conservator (1978-2003) I am a visual artist (Bookbinder/Conservator) a poet & writer. I consider myself a Medieval Postmodernist in my thinking about the visual art that I create.

My first commission. Blue leather bound in wallet style. On cover an agate and a hand carved walnut duck. Under the cover a line gilded with variegated copper foil.

Wallet Bound in Deerskin

Deer Skin, Agate, Hand Carved Coyote of Black Walnut, Small Turquoise, End Papers of Silk, Top Edge Gilded w/variegated Copper ~ Goffered & Hand Painted, Head Bands of alternation Copper Wire & Green Silk.

Faux silk endpapers, leaf patterns.

Collage using various papers & copper wire, blue jay feather. Image of coyotes singing to the moon & coyotes on the moon singing the refrain.

Maroon Leather, Copper Pipe, Chinese Coins, Hand Marbled Paper. Silk Ties & Brass Bells. Shaking the book causes it to rattle.

Paste downs of hand marbled paper. Fly leaves of mono-printed silk backed to paper.

Book cover of dark brown leather over five double raised bands. The eagle is variegated copper on a leather pad and pressed into the cover.

The inside of the wrapper of hand painted silk (green silk w/purple waves. The same silk was used for the paste-downs & the fly leaves (backed to moriki mulberry paper)

The top & bottom of the book was gilded w/variegated copper. Top of the book was painted w/purple acrylic then goffered with a star pattern & each star hand painted. The head band is of red copper wire and green silk. The page marker is of green silk.

6″X9″X1.50″ Cover of black walnut, 1/4 spine dark brown deerskin over five double raised bands. Two brass clasps on the foredge. Image on the cover is Evergreen State College’s iconic clock tower. The image is of a variegated copper foil on-lay w/four acrylic trees, the clock hands show 5 o’clock symbolizing that is time to go home or retire.

The paste downs and fly leaves are of acrylic marbled paper backed onto silk. The hinges of green silk backed to paper.

6″X9″X1.50″. There were so many notes and memorabilia give to me to add to the book that I decided to include a portfolio to hold everything. The cover is of blue silk over thin book boards. The latch is hand carved walnut inserted into a brass clasp, the tie of a bit of painted silk.

The portfolio is opened showing the notes & memorabilia that is contained inside. The inside of the portfolio is of moriki papers & Niddegen paper.
